We spoke with Makezu co-founder and CEO, Hélène Lucien, and her team about building an app that helps bootstrapped startups, entrepreneurs, and small businesses send personalized messages to target customers on Twitter. Hélène met her co-founder Anne-Sophie de Gabriac while she was running another startup. Neither of the co-founders have development backgrounds, so they turned to Bubble, which allowed them to build Makezu without recruiting a development team.
What problem does your company solve?
Hélène Lucien: Makezu finds potential customers on Twitter and sends them a personalized message when they express a need for a product, especially at important life milestones. Our goal is to help bootstrapped startups, entrepreneurs, or any small- to medium-sized businesses with low budgets/small teams to find and interact with their target audience. With Makezu, we send messages when a business’s target customers are most likely to be interested in (or in need of) a business’s product.
How does your app work?
After registering and linking their Twitter account to Makezu, users can create a campaign. They must describe the product or service they sell using keywords, or select a related major life event (such as a wedding) from our growing list. They write a template for the message that they wish to send to potential customers, and Makezu determines the most opportune time to send it. We provide users with important analytics, including number of messages sent, the number of clicks obtained from the dashboard tab, and the number of social profiles reached.
Tell us a little about your background and how you discovered no-code tools like Bubble.
I met Anne-Sophie (now co-founder of Makezu) when I was running another startup. Neither of us have a development background.
During this previous experience, we had a small but dedicated team of developers, and since building the product was taking a lot of time, I discovered no-code tools by looking for solutions that would allow me to set up marketing operations without having to ask the developers to create landing pages and automations. This is how I first discovered Zapier, which was really game changing for me. When I started working on Makezu, I looked for more powerful tools that would enable me to create the product I had in mind without needing to recruit a development team. Then I discovered Bubble.
Why did you build your app on Bubble?
We wanted to develop our minimum viable product (MVP) quickly in order to test out the idea and follow the advice from this famous quote: “Fail quickly - succeed faster.” Bubble has provided the necessary tools to build an app on our own--I’m still blown away by its potential. It took 6 weeks to develop the platform with Bubble. After testing Makezu this past January, we confirmed that small businesses were interested in the app, which encouraged us to continue building. So we decided to code our API based on NLP and machine learning in order to identify an expressed need and connect it to our Bubble app (This part took a little longer 😉)
What has been your traction or successes so far?
We released the actual version of Makezu 17 days ago. At the moment, we have 110 beta testers (we are pre-revenue and providing a free campaign). So far, we have sent 1336 messages on behalf of our users. The click rate for Makezu messages averages around 8%-38%.
What are your future plans for your app?
We are improving the app’s user experience to match my original vision. In the future, I want to expand on value propositions (such as customizable meta tags), as well as provide businesses with a tracking code to help our users understand how their Twitter targets found their landing pages. We’re also thinking about connecting Makezu to other social networks and advertising platforms. But for now, I’m focusing on acquiring users for Makezue and improving our API so that we keep targeting audiences at key moments.
