We asked Tinyask's co-founders, Wei Li Lim and Isaac Ng, about building an audio Q&A platform app that allows users to hear how others have built their careers. The app asks quesstions on career milestones to help navigate the ambiguity of career progression and transition. Wei and Isaac chose Bubble because the no-code platform enables them to directly build across all three parts of the app in one editor, while still being able to connect to external plugins and APIs.
Tell us about your app and what it does.
Tinyask is an audio Q&A platform to hear how people build their careers.
We break down big career milestones into tiny questions to navigate the ambiguity of career progression and transitions.
There is no shortage of helpful career advice on the internet, however, it is incredibly rare and difficult to be able to learn directly from someone who has been through your path and get the guidance needed to bridge information into action.
As knowledge work continues to grow across industries and borders, so will the opportunity to build careers around your interests and values. These jobs of the future will not be bounded by traditional career paths, and those who are finding different ways to chart their own careers will be the first to reap its rewards.
The Bubble community is filled with ambitious people just like that, they are here everyday building their own paths in careers that didn't even exist just a few years ago.
How does your app work?
On Tinyask, users learn through audio Q&As and short cohorts.
When you first sign up to Tinyask, you start by adding career milestones that you have achieved and ones that you are working towards. These are not job titles, and deliberately so! We believe that the work you do goes far beyond your title and your education.
The first format of learning is through short form audio Q&A where you get to explore other milestones people are working on and hear their responses to questions asked about them. Your profile page also functions as your persistent career AMA (ask me anything).
The second is for those who want a deeper dive, you can join short cohorts guided by people who have specific knowledge and experience about that milestone. You will be guided through a learning material, learn alongside a small group of peers and get to ask your questions freely. All cohorts are outcome focused that take you to the next step along your milestone.
Tell us a little about your background and how you discovered no-code tools like Bubble.
It wasn't until I first worked in a tech company that I realised that I could go beyond just a consumer of technology and actually be part of building the products that people use daily. However, coming from a non-technical background, product roles inside these tech companies were very limited. The closest thing I got to building products were over-engineered spreadsheets, but that pursuit of building fancy spreadsheets was what led me down a no-code rabbit hole and eventually to Bubble.
Why did you build your app on Bubble?
As a non-technical founder, it just made sense to build on Bubble that takes care of all three components of what an app needs -- the front end, app logic and the database.
Being able to directly build across all three parts of the app in one editor while still being able to connect to external plugins and APIs meant that we could build everything fully independently.
Especially in the early days, when iterating on the concept and product needs to happen rapidly, being able to stand on our own two feet is a necessity.
What have been your milestones or successes so far?
Speaking of milestones! August has been the biggest month for Tinyask so far because we just launched v1 after 1 year of building out the MVP.
We currently have 150 users, growing by 12% each week and just made our first dollar in August. For a long time, a big milestone for us was to get our first paying customer, and we didn't think we'd hit that anytime soon given that we haven't done any marketing yet.
What are your next steps or future plans for your app?
Just as we are opening up access to how careers are built, we want to also be open about how we're building Tinyask, so this is our the first of many entries to the #buildinpublic movement.
We are also actively looking for people who want to host their own cohorts. You get to give back to the community at scale and get paid doing so. Milestones that are currently active on Tinyask include Product Management, VC & Community Building, if you are passionate about helping others navigate their careers because you had to learn the lessons the hard way. We would love to hear from you! You can find out more here.
