We asked Zyg Learning co-founders Daniel Brandley, Jordan Brandley, Rhett Prestwich, and Taylar Ngo about building a study organization tool for medical students and educators. Daniel is a fourth-year medical student who built a system of spreadsheets to help himself and his peers stay organized during the first few years of medical school. He chose Bubble because the no-code platform provided the best opportunity for his team to quickly prototype, test, and implement feedback on their app, with very low development costs.
Tell us about your app and what it does.
Zyg is a study organization tool for medical students and educators. It was built by medical students to improve the process and quality of learning in medical school. We integrate the most popular online study resources with school curricula and learning to track. Features include automated lecture matching, collaborative playlists, study tracking, peer-reviews, and more, all in one place.

How does your app work?
Students create an account and are matched with their medical school and classmates. Next, they collaboratively add basic course and lecture information. The app then automatically finds the most relevant learning content (videos, readings, flashcards) for each lecture filtered by each student’s preferred resources. Students can refine this match and begin studying by lecture or topic; efficiently using their favorite resources to prepare for school, clinic, and board exams simultaneously. In addition, users can create and share custom playlists or resources, use advanced search and filters, add or view peer-reviews, track their studies, and more.

Tell us a little about your background and how you discovered no-code tools like Bubble.
I am a fourth-year medical student who began this process by building a system of spreadsheets to help myself and my peers stay organized during the first few years of medical school. My computer-programming brother had just begun using Bubble and excitedly introduced me to no-code app development. After learning the basics of Bubble we quickly became immersed in design and creation, hoping to greatly enhance the utility of prior spreadsheet solutions. The potential to create helpful technology and adapt so quickly using no-code continues to excite our growing team and benefit fellow students.
Why did you build your app on Bubble?
Bubble provided the best opportunity to quickly prototype, test, and implement feedback on our app, with very low development costs. Their ingenious software and continued improvements have enabled a greater focus on student-focused development and reiteration, without requiring external funding or programming. The opportunity Bubble provides to design, prototype, and scale, efficiently and simultaneously, really is an incredible value for us.
What have been your milestones or successes so far?
We have focused on development and beta-testing for the last two years. Our app has been used by numerous medical students who have been gracious to work through errors and provide feedback. Our team continues to grow and now includes professionals in design, software engineering, and business. Our app has become more sophisticated over time, as we have learned and improved, and is now ready to provide exceptional value for many more students and educators.
What are your next steps or future plans for your app?
As we near the end of the initial development and launch of our product, we hope our tool will help many medical students learn more efficiently and effectively. We plan to market to individual students and institutions, keeping accessibility and student welfare at the center of our operations. We hope to continue forming mutually beneficial relationships with study resource providers and creators, in addition to leaders in medical education and other fields.
