We talked to the founder of Behavior Rocket, Vasco Lopes, PsyD., about making an app for parents to help their children achieve various tasks and behavioral goals. As a child clinical psychologist, Lopes created a platform that provides goal and reward-based strategies for parents to improve their child's behavior. When COVID-19 pushed working parents to encounter various problems at home, he decided to build an app that solves childcare problems and help families. With Bubble's powerful no-code platform, Lopes was able to develop his idea without needing to hire engineers.

What problem does your project solve?

Behavior Rocket is an app that parents can use to improve their child's compliance with tasks and behavioral goals. As a child clinical psychologist, I find that parents often struggle with following through behavioral strategies that can help improve their child's behavior. Behavior Rocket provides a seamless, easy-to-use platform on parents' phones so that they can stay consistent with implementing behavioral strategies to improve their child's behavior.

How does your app work?

Behavior Rocket allows parents to create specific goals for their child, award points for their child's positive behavior, select rewards, and have their child redeem rewards with the points that they earn. Parents can show their child his/her dashboard at any time, which shows the child's progress toward ongoing goals, how close they are to redeeming rewards, and how they have been performing with behavioral compliance overall. Parents will also see many different tips and strategies about how to improve child behavior in different sections of the app.

Tell us a little about your background and how you discovered no-code tools like Bubble.

I am a clinical psychologist and professor with expertise in behavioral treatments for kids with ADHD and behavioral challenges. Over the past few years, I've developed technological ways to improve the behavioral treatments that I use every day so that we can further improve child behavior. I learned about Bubble from a friend when one day, I was talking about how frustrating it is that I cannot further build out my innovative ideas without hiring a programmer.

Vasco Lopes, PsyD., created Behavior Rocket to support parents and families with childcare struggles during the COVID-19 lockdown in New York.

Why did you build your app on Bubble?

I took the leap to build my app in the first week of the COVID-19 quarantine. I live in New York City and remember when we first went into lockdown, feeling helpless that I couldn't do anything to help alleviate the burden that parents were facing in supporting their children through quarantine. Then I decided to channel that energy into building an app that could help parents improve their children's behavior more seamlessly. I know that it probably sounds cliché to say this, but being able to channel my energy into building this app gave me a sense of purpose during the first two months of COVID-19 and gave me hope that I could build something that could help families.

What has been your traction or success so far?

I'm currently in beta-testing mode with Behavior Rocket. I have asked psychologist colleagues to test the app and provide me with feedback on how I can improve it. My colleagues have been impressed with how easy it is to use and have noticed certain touches that I've put into the app that are designed to increase the effectiveness of how parents can positively reinforce child behavior.

What are your future plans for your app?

I would love to adapt the platform so that it could be useful for teachers to use with their students. I've consulted with teachers throughout my career, and I've learned that teachers are always looking for tools to help them manage students' behavior in the classroom. I've also learned that teachers have way too much on their plates, which makes it challenging for them to implement cumbersome positive reinforcement strategies. I think that tools, such as Behavior Rocket, can help teachers implement positive reinforcements to students in a much more seamless and sustainable manner to help manage classroom behavior.
