We asked CS Protect founder, Rory Boyd, about building an app that helps fight Covid by allowing users to check-in at businesses across Scotland. Rory worked for Cirque Du Soleil as the Head of Automation for five years. He chose Bubble to build his app because the no-code platform allows for the quick creation of robust platforms and enables him to make changes rapidly.
Tell us about your app and what it does.
Our platform helps fight Covid by allowing users to check-in at businesses all across Scotland. By signing up once, guests can store their visits at multiple locations without the need to hand their contact details over to each individual business. If there is a Covid outbreak, we can share guest details directly with the government, bypassing the business altogether. All check-in data is automatically deleted after 21 days.
How does your app work?
We have two different types of users. First, we have our businesses who create an account, enter some details and then have their own portal where they can download custom QR Codes & Posters. Our main users are our guests. They visit a location and scan the custom QR Code.
They can check-in as a guest - meaning they have to provide their details each visit - or can create an account where they can check in to any business using the app by simply tapping a button. All check in data is automatically deleted after 21 days per government guidelines. The guest experience is entirely mobile based, and have their own dashboard to view their check ins on a map, and see how long until each one is deleted.
Tell us a little about your background and how you discovered no-code tools like Bubble.
Pre-Covid, I worked for Cirque Du Soleil as a Head of Automation for 5 years. There we have a need to keep track of many separate assets, create schedules and complete checklists. Bubble was perfect for creating a custom platform that allowed us to create such a specific app. I have had a basic background in Web Design, however very little coding experience, which is why Bubble was the perfect fit for me!
Why did you build your app on Bubble?
The platform was created in around four days. Like many things during Covid, rules and regulations changed quickly - often overnight. The government announced the need for businesses to capture guest contact details 1 week before it came into action. There are very few other methods to create such a platform in such a short space of time - perhaps even for experienced coders. Since Bubble allows for such quick creation of robust platforms, it was perfect for us. It also allowed for rapid changes and updates to be made as the covid situation progressed.
What have been your milestones or successes so far?
The platform was originally designed for one business. It has since expanded into 17 separate apps for different areas of Scotland. We have had over 600,000 users and over 1000 locations using the platform and it has been featured in news stories across the country.
What are your next steps or future plans for your app?
Unlike most apps, we actually look forward to the day that it is no longer needed! Born out of necessity, the platform purely helps to try and fight covid. The next steps for the platform are actually it's end, and dealing with its closure when it's no longer required - hopefully sooner rather than later!
