We asked Futureshop founder, Marc Brodeur, about building an app that transforms how users shop online, by making it easier to find products made with sustainable materials. Marc has a background in e-commerce and site building. He chose Bubble because the no-code platform enabled him to create sophisticated features like different datatypes, filtered searches, an editor back-end portal, user accounts with favorites, and more.
Tell us about your app and what it does.
The goal of Futureshop is to transform how we shop online, by making it easier to find the things we want, but made from sustainable materials, and with environmentally friendly methods. Right now, Futureshop is the internet's largest shopping search engine for sustainably made clothing basics and activewear. We are quickly expanding into all clothing and beyond!
How does your app work?
Futureshop is a portal, search engine, and directory. Any web visitor can use the advanced product search or the directory for browsing. A user can add "favorites" by making an account, and some brands have coupons available. Users click through to the ecommerce site of the product's brand to complete the purchase.
Tell us a little about your background and how you discovered no-code tools like Bubble.
I have a background in ecommerce and site building. I originally considered working with more traditional tools (React, etc) but the development seemed onerous for an MVP version. My experience with no-code was with Wordpress, which is great, but I wasn't sure if it would work with the featureset that I wanted for Futureshop. I tried out Bubble, and also compared it with WebFlow, and was very impressed with Bubble's ability to do basically all of the advanced coding features that I wanted. For new projects, Bubble is a no-brainer.
Why did you build your app on Bubble?
I wanted to make relatively sophisticated features like many different datatypes, filtered searches, an editor back-end portal, user accounts with favorites, etc. Bubble was the only platform that I tested for which I was confident it could do all the things that I wanted.
What have been your milestones or successes so far?
In Q1, I finished the MVP of the app, and split the development database from the production database, which was an important milestone, at the time, and now I have worked with a small team to catalogue over 6000 sustainable products into the database. This summer, I have added some content producers to the team, and we will be building out a social media presence for Futureshop. This next phase is all about marketing, while the database continues to get built.
What are your next steps or future plans for your app?
The vision is to create a sustainable shopping search engine that can be people's "first choice" when searching for products to buy, the same way that, for many, Amazon is the first shopping search that one does.
