We spoke with the Pop To The Shop team about building an app that connects people who need food or essential medicine delivered to them. Founder George Bevis has been involved with quite a few ventures across the commercial and not-for-profit sectors and created Pop To The Shop to help vulnerable populations during the COVID-19 pandemic. Having built other apps with Bubble, he knew that the platform would be the perfect fit for this project as well.

What problem does your project solve?

Pop To The Shop (PTTS) is a free online website that supports people who are in danger of going hungry during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our app complements existing community support initiatives, which have been a crucial part of piloting and developing Pop To The Shop.

How does your app work?

We designed PTTS so that people can request a delivery for themselves, as well as for vulnerable family and friends. Users place orders for groceries or non-prescription medicines, along with the maximum price that they are willing to pay for each item and a delivery time. A local volunteer then accepts and delivers the order to the requested address at the agreed time. We adhere strictly to social distancing guidelines, so we offer electronic payments and contact-free deliveries to safely support those in need.

Tell us a little about your background and how you discovered no-code tools like Bubble.

Alexandra McBain: George, our founder, is a serial entrepreneur who created Tide, an innovative banking service for small businesses. Before that, he was a banker at Capital One, RBS, and Barclays. However, he is much prouder of the various unsuccessful startups that he tried launching, which taught him the necessary skills to build Tide. He is currently developing other “for good” ventures across the commercial and not-for-profit sectors.

When the lockdown started and people went into self-isolation, George was shocked by the reports of people who were unable to access essential food and medicine, including his 79-year-old mother. To help her out, George paid a minicab firm to shop for her. Aware that others were struggling, George decided to build his own solution.

Why did you build your app on Bubble?

Having built other apps on Bubble, we knew that the platform would be the perfect fit for building Pop To The Shop. Thanks to Bubble, we have developed a sophisticated online payment system that meets our app’s scale.

What has been your traction or success so far?

Pop To The Shop has signed up over 100 volunteers to deliver groceries and non-prescription medicine. Our founder was recently featured in the Daily Mail’s special podcast series, Coronacast Daily. We have received positive user reviews from a number of outlets, including a feature on Trusted Reviews.
