We asked Rate My Excel founder, Lianna Gerrish, about building an app that helps companies quickly vet candidates' Excel skills with a fully automated testing platform. Lianna has a corporate finance background and some basic experience in front-end web development and scripting. She chose Bubble because the no-code platform offers templates, forums, documentation, and integrations for her to build a powerful, fully customizable app without having to code.
Tell us about your app and what it does.
Rate My Excel helps companies quickly vet candidates' on the job Excel skills with our fully automated testing platform. A hiring manager can remotely test up to ten candidates by email invite. Scoring is instant and includes a custom score report comparing candidates and attached workbooks with samples of their work.
How does your app work?
The main part of the app is the manager's personalized dashboard where they can invite new candidates, review score reports and change settings. Once the candidates receive an email invite, they can log into their assessment, answer questions and submit a work sample. There are also free resources like the demo, 5-minute self-assessment checklist and blog.
Tell us a little about your background and how you discovered no-code tools like Bubble.
My background is in corporate finance with some basic experience in front-end web development and scripting. I heard about Bubble and the no code philosophy on Hacker News and had to try it out.
Why did you build your app on Bubble?
I built Rate My Excel on Bubble to focus on making a great assessment platform, not reinventing the wheel on building blocks like contact forms or user log ins. Users care about what the website can do, not which hot new frameworks it was built on. Plus, the templates and forums & documentation made quick protoyping a breeze while integrations with Stripe, Sendgrid and the API Connector unlocked powerful features. Basically, if there is something you want to build there is a way to do it in Bubble without writing a line of code.
What have been your milestones or successes so far?
My happiest day was the day Stripe notified me of Rate My Excel's very first sale. As a novice coming from the world of WordPress I never thought I'd have a fully functioning web app that could test anyone remotely, collect payments and create user dashboards, all in a few months. On the technical side, my proudest moment was seeing my first webhook receive assessment results and update the database automatically.
What are your future plans for your app?
In the future I would like to offer new assessments that users have been asking for, such as advanced Excel skills or more targeted case studies. I would also like to add more insightful sections and charts to the user score report and write some more blog posts.
