We spoke with YardGuru founder, Dylan Anderson, about building an app that streamlines the process of requesting gardening and landscaping services. When he needed some assistance with his lawn, Dylan discovered that booking a gardener was a hassle and decided to take matters into his own hands. While he was initially unable to secure the time and funds to launch the project, he later discovered Bubble, built his app on the no-code platform, and “never looked back.”
What problem does your company solve?
Dylan Anderson: YardGuru helps simplify and streamline the process of booking a gardener. Before YardGuru, booking someone to “mow your lawn” meant that you had to call a landscaper and get them to your house so that they could provide you a quote for their services. To solve this problem, YardGuru users have access to a list of gardeners in their area with a “Final Quote Price” clearly displayed, which means that you know exactly what they’re paying for before booking their gardener.
How does your app work?
We make it pretty easy to get your instant quote on YardGuru: users input their address, select what services they want done, and add a few other small details. They are then presented with a list of landscapers, which they can sort by previous customer reviews, price, and distance. Once they’ve found the right business, users simply book a date and time. They can follow the status of their booking using the “Dashboard” feature.
Tell us a little about your background and how you discovered no-code tools like Bubble.
I like to keep myself busy. I enjoyed creating websites using WordPress, but I was disappointed with the lack of customization available on that platform. I had a drive to create YardGuru, but I struggled to execute my project due to lack of time and funds. As it happens, I met a guy who helped develop Uber. He told me about Bubble. Intrigued, I jumped on, had a browse, and never looked back.
Why did you build your app on Bubble?
I had an issue and decided to fix it. My partner and I had our first baby (and last!) last year, but before our little bub came, we were in the hospital daily. We had a “house inspection” and needed our lawns mowed, but we simply didn’t have the time to do it. I ended up having to ring several landscapers to organize something myself. They either wanted to come look at the lawn and provide a quote or simply weren’t available. I thought to myself, “There has to be a better way.” Bubble allowed me to streamline the process so that other people could avoid this conundrum in the future.
What has been your biggest success so far?
The people! The people I have met along the way have been exceptional, from users in the Bubble community to the landscapers and customers–this is what I define as “success.” Creating an app that helps small businesses get more customers is a huge motivator.
What are your future plans for your app?
What’s in store for YardGuru in the near future? Landscaping. We want to provide instant landscaping quotes to residential and business owners. With an interactive map that allows clients to design their own yard and receive a quote, users will be able to request their landscaping needs without picking up the phone. We’ve already partnered with hundreds of gardeners around Australia, but we’re hoping to expand into more international markets. Watch out! YardGuru is coming to a city near you.
