When Chad Sakonchick's friend started losing business to online companies offering DIY legal services for less, Chad helped him automate his operation to better compete. The idea worked, and the duo co-founded BetterLegal to help founders save time and money registering new businesses. The business grew steadily, despite the endless loop of expensive part-time developers writing and maintaining custom code. Then this founder found a better way in Bubble’s no-code platform.
What took four years to build in custom code was rebuilt in less than one on Bubble — leaving bandwidth to build out internal tools, to boot. Today, BetterLegal is a well-oiled machine that’s ready to scale up and innovate even further. “We're five years old and we did $2.7 million in revenue last year,” Chad said.

Here’s how they got where they are today.

Automation Levels the Legal Playing Field

In 2017, Chad had his hand in a few business ideas, one of which involved an attorney he knew who specialized in registering new companies as limited liability corporations (LLCs) for clients. He was losing business to online services like LegalZoom, who charged less than half his normal bill rate. Chad knew automation could help.

Most of the attorney’s time was spent filling in blanks on templates that generated the legal documents to set up an LLC. Chad’s automation cut the time to file each registration down from four hours to ten minutes. The attorney slashed his fee from $1,500 per filing to $299. “He realized he was making more money per minute this way because he was spending so much less time,” Chad explained.

The friends agreed to go into business together, and Chad took a leap of faith and sold his house to go all-in on the company. The new, automation-driven model worked: they registered roughly 50 LLCs during their first year and bought the domain name BetterLegal.com. But while the automation strategy was sound, their tech stack needed an overhaul.

Rip and Replace Your Pricey Tech Stack with Bubble

BetterLegal was originally built with a combination of SaaS tools including Asana, Salesforce, and Typeform, stitched together with custom code. But they dreamed of giving customers a self-service dashboard to manage account information, make changes to documents, and add functionality as needed. So Chad hired freelancers to build an app from scratch in Next.js, Django, and Postgres all hosted on AWS.

“I kept adding developers to try to solve the front-end design problem.”

That lasted BetterLegal for five years, but managing site development, updates, and operations through freelancers wasn’t what you’d call fun. “One, it was just hard to get the hours. Two, anytime I tasked a freelancer to work on a new feature, they’d refactor the website instead, making it a half a millisecond faster,” Chad said. “This went on for years. I kept adding developers to try to solve the front-end design problem. We were spending upwards of $8,000–10,000 a month on four different JavaScript developers, just to keep the site up and get basic stuff done,” he said.

Everything changed in early 2022 when Chad joined a 30-day development challenge and tried Bubble for the first time. “I spun up a little side hustle, built it by myself, and a light bulb went off in my head,” he said. “We can completely rip and replace everything we built for BetterLegal with Bubble.” Finally, Chad had the answer to his front-end woes.

“A light bulb went off in my head: We can completely rip and replace everything we built, with Bubble.”

The team started building on Bubble in February 2022, running the old system and Bubble in parallel while doing nightly syncs. A year later — just 25% of the time it had taken them to build on custom code — everything was running on Bubble. They’d even spun up an internal task management tool along the way.

Easy Customizations to Expand Your Offerings

Since Chad could manage the front-end work in Bubble himself, more resources were freed up for back-end development and growth-minded innovation. For example, when Chad used Bubble to replace a five-year-old intake form originally built on TypeForm, subscriptions doubled almost immediately. That’s because Chad used Bubble’s customization tools to optimize the user flow, offering a state compliance add-on earlier in the process. Compliance is key to keeping an LLC in good standing with the Secretary of State’s office, and offering it early helped their clients anticipate the need sooner — and seriously boosted the revenue stream for BetterLegal.

“We were pretty good at selling registered agent services,” Chad said. “Now almost everybody that buys registered agent also buys state compliance.” The company’s monthly recurring revenue shot up, increasing from less than $1,000 month-over-month in summer 2022 to more than $2,500 month-over-month by October of that year. Chad said BetterLegal had its best month ever in January 2023 and is on track to hit $1 million in annual recurring revenue this coming fall.

Better Internal Tooling, Built with Bubble

Chad was also able to replace Asana, a paid SaaS solution, with a task management system he built on Bubble. This saved the company a significant amount of money and headaches. “Because our data was already in Bubble, our team no longer needed multiple windows open to go back and forth between different apps. Everything's in one place.” Chad said he’s also thinking about making an internal contact center for chat, email, telephony, and SMS — leveraging a Bubble plugin — to replace another paid subscription product.

What’s Next for BetterLegal?

Ever the innovating entrepreneur, Chad is focused on finding even more ways to remove the headaches involved in starting and maintaining a business. To that end, the company just launched BetterLegal Assistant, a free browser extension that transforms complicated legal jargon into easy-to-understand language.

But now that it’s built on Bubble, BetterLegal is a well-oiled machine, and it’s time to scale. The next year will largely center on marketing and growth. “I just want to focus on getting from $2.7 to $5 million in annual revenue,” Chad said.

Sounds like a much more exciting goal than trying to hunt down yet another part-time developer to fix the website.
