John Roberts, co-founder of Sevwins, spoke to us about his app for setting and completing goals for athletes. During the Sevwins app beta, athletes and teams from over 26 high school, college, and competitive league teams were able to set and complete physical, mental, and career goals each and every week. Bubble allowed the Sevwins team to take advantage of real-time prototyping to give users a more "realistic" experience to receive invaluable feedback and create the best app they could.
Tell us about your app and what it does.
Sevwins was founded to improve the lives of student-athletes. Using the Sevwins app daily, athletes develop intentional habits to improve their mind, body, and spirit. Through simple daily reps, athletes learn to be more aware, organized, and accountable. Sevwins gives coaches the ability to impact more lives. Coaches transform into coach-mentors when they understand the individual.
How does your app work?
Once a high school, club, or college coach sets up their team account, they invite the athletes to join the team. Once the athletes are signed up they receive daily text messages reminding them to complete their power habits. The power habits consist of setting weekly goals, assessing mental skills daily, and reflecting on their successes and challenges at the end of the week.
Coaches have access to all of the team's individual goals, assessments, and reflections. The coach can quickly review team trends or check on individual profiles and responses.
Tell us a little about your background and how you discovered no-code tools like Bubble.
For the past 15 years, I’ve been working in enterprise software. I was part of the early ServiceNow team in the roles of consultant, engineer, and product manager. I was heavily involved in the effort to bring the ServiceNow application platform to “citizen developers” across the enterprise allowing IT and business users to build enterprise process applications without writing any code. And this was well before the term “no-code” was commonly used.
After leaving ServiceNow, I provided advisory services to ServiceNow partners that were developing apps for the marketplace. Due to my roles in the aPaaS (application platform as a service) market, I tracked the industry and competitors closely. It’s been awesome watching the introduction and evolution of so many powerful low-code and no-code platforms.
Why did you build your app on Bubble?
Based on years of experience working and advising software startups, I know how important and challenging it can be to get market and product validation. Even though I have an engineering background, I wanted to develop an MVP as quick and low cost as possible to get early feedback. Sure, we had the option to use the typical mockup or prototyping apps, but I figured why not just make it work as the real app would. My experience has taught me that the more realistic a user’s experience is with a prototype, the more they will think through the experience and provide more valuable feedback.
I knew we had 5 or 6 primary use case features that we would need to support. I selected a few platforms that I knew and a few that were recent discoveries for me. I built the scenarios on each platform to understand how well each could be accomplished and supported.
It didn’t take me very long to realize that Bubble should be at the top of my list. It exceeded my requirements and expectations.
What have been your milestones or successes so far?
Besides telling every pre-product founder I know about Bubble, we’ve made a lot of progress.
After validating the initial concept and prototypes, we quickly expanded into a private beta that included 26 high school, college, and competitive league teams. This summer we expanded to public beta and public general availability was launched in September.
In addition to recently getting our first paying customers, our successes are also measured by comments like this from college and high school student-athletes.
"Sevwins has made me a better person. I feel smarter, stronger, and more connected.” – College Student-Athlete
Since our initial experience with Bubble was relatively easy, we created a second app to host a fully interactive demo of the application using all of the same logic of the production application.
What are future plans for your app?
As an early-stage startup, we are continuing to learn from our initial customers and iterate fast. Bubble accelerates our development work with minimal tech resources which keeps our costs low while we increase revenue traction. As the customer base grows and the product complexity expands, we will continue to leverage Bubble in every possible way.
We're currently experimenting with native app wrappers to improve the user experience. Future roadmap features include more advanced analytics, intelligent insights for the coaches, contextual content recommendations for athletes, and even some Natural Language Processing (NLP) for text processing and trend analysis.
Bubble is a leader in the no-code movement. Bubble offers a powerful point-and-click web editor and cloud hosting platform that allows users to build fully customizable web applications and workflows, ranging from simple prototypes to complex marketplaces, SaaS products, and more.
