Payment issues: FAQ

What to do when a payment isn't going through — accepted payment methods, retrying failed invoices, resolving card blocks, and resubscribing after a canceled subscription.

Written by Sofia Maconi

Why is my payment not going through?

We recommend contacting your financial institution for more details as to why your payment may not be going through. If you continue to face difficulties, contact us via the AI chatbot in the bottom right-hand corner of any bubble.io page — express that your payment didn't go through and follow the prompts. You can always ask to talk with a person if needed.

Note: Bubble only accepts the following payment methods:

  • Visa

  • MasterCard

  • American Express

  • JCB

  • Discover

  • Diners Club

Can you retry my failed invoice payment?

If you have updated your payment information since your last failed payment, you can retry via the AI chatbot on our support page. Use the chat input to express that you'd like to retry a payment, then follow the prompts.

How do I resolve blocks caused by failed card payments?

A failed past payment can sometimes result in a subscription block. To fix this:

  1. Remove and re-add your credit card: Log into your Bubble account, remove the existing credit card, and re-add the same card. This triggers a $1 authorization-only charge that clears the failed payment record.

  2. Verify authorization: Ensure the $1 authorization charge is successful to reset your card status. Once verified, attempt subscribing or upgrading again.

  3. Use a different payment method: Alternatively, using a new or different credit card can bypass restrictions tied to the original card.

Contacting your bank is often necessary to resolve authorization blocks. Inform them that the payment is for Bubble Group, Inc. and ensure your card supports international and recurring payments. If the transaction was declined with a specific code such as 'do_not_honor,' ask your bank to authorize the payment.

What if my subscription was canceled due to a failed payment?

If your Bubble subscription has been canceled, it's not possible to retry manual payments for the previous subscription period. To continue using Bubble services, resubscribe to the desired plan and proceed with payment for the new subscription period.

Why are payments declined?

  • Insufficient funds: Ensure sufficient funds are available in your account.

  • International transaction restrictions: Some banks block international payments by default. Contact your bank to enable these transactions.

  • Recurring payment authorization: Ensure your card is set up to allow recurring payments.

  • Specific decline codes: If your payment is declined with a code such as 'do_not_honor,' contact your bank to resolve the issue and authorize the transaction.

I don't recognize a charge from Bubble — what should I do?

Start by checking Account page > Invoices for your full billing history. If the charge isn't listed there — or if you don't have a Bubble account — contact support via the AI chatbot and ask to speak with a person. Have these details ready to help the team investigate quickly:

  • Last 4 digits of the charged card

  • Card expiration date

  • Card type (Visa, Mastercard, Amex, etc.)

  • Date of the charge

  • Amount as shown on your bank statement

  • A screenshot of the charge, if available

  • Any email addresses that may be linked to a Bubble account

Some additional details that can help us investigate more quickly:

  • For workload overage disputes, include the overage unit count and the rate per WU charged.

  • For charge discrepancies, include any added fees or adjustments and the original invoice amount.

  • For app-related billing issues, list the app names and their statuses (active or inactive) at the time of the charge.

  • If the account linked to the charge is unknown, include any transaction details or authorization codes.

Note: Bubble will send a verification email from [email protected] to confirm account ownership before processing any billing action. You must respond to that email for the investigation to proceed. Billing actions such as refunds are only processed after the account holder's explicit consent.

How can I remove a payment method from my account?

You can remove your payment method at Account > Billing, but Bubble won't allow it if any of these apply: you have an active paid plan or free trial, you're the paying user on an Agency account, or you have unpaid invoices or unfinalized overage charges.

Once those are cleared, go to Account > Billing, find the Payment Method section, and click "Remove payment card".

I'm in India — why can't I access the free trial, and how do I subscribe?

The free trial isn't available in India because of RBI recurring-payment guidelines that require 3D Secure (3DS) authentication — which the free trial flow doesn't support. You can subscribe directly to the Starter plan or above, starting 10 days after account creation.

When subscribing, follow the 3DS prompts during checkout (a pop-up will appear — click "Continue"). If your local card gets blocked, try a Forex card — these often bypass auto-debit restrictions. For an existing subscription, downgrade to Free first, then re-upgrade to trigger 3DS authentication.

How do I troubleshoot 3D Secure (3DS) authentication failures?

3DS failures usually come from one of three things: your bank hasn't enabled 3DS on your card, browser pop-ups are blocked, or the card on file is outdated. Work through these steps:

  1. Contact your bank: Confirm 3DS is enabled and ask about the specific decline reason.

  2. Enable browser pop-ups: The 3DS authentication window won't appear if they're blocked.

  3. Remove and re-add your payment method: Go to Account > Billing, remove your card, then re-add it. Then restart the subscription flow from Settings → App plan → Change plan. Updating the card on file alone won't trigger 3DS — you need to go through the full subscription flow.

  4. Try a different card: Forex cards often work well for users in India and other regions where local cards face restrictions.
